At the historical society, Isobel bites John’s neck, sending him down the stairs, the commotion of which distracts everyone from Elena’s sudden absence. Isobel has taken her to the cemetery where Isobel’s grave is located. She gets a call from that mysterious witch who’s working with Klaus and learns that her job is done. He now has the moonstone that Isobel tricked Katherine into getting for them, and the doppelganger, aka Elena, will remain safe. “I’m sorry I was such a disappointment to you,” Isobel tells her daughter, before removing her necklace and then burning up in the sun. One major death down; two to go.
Caroline arrives home to find Matt. He says he needs to know more about Vicki, but once she spills, it’s too much for him to handle. He asks her to compel him to forget, which she thinks she does, but it turns out he has vervain in him and is temporarily immune to her compulsion. He leaves the house and goes to see Caroline’s mom, who had told him to find out everything he could about her daughter being a vampire. “I feel like she died,” Matt says to Sheriff Forbes. “She did,” Liz responds.
Back at the house, Elena asks John why he trusted Isobel. He explains that not only was he there when she gave birth to Elena, but that he was the first girl he ever loved. “I will do whatever you want me to do,” he says, explaining he’ll even leave if it would make her feel safer. “Everything you touch falls apart,” Elena says to John. “But you’re the only parent I have left. So maybe I can learn not to hate you.”
In the final scene, Katherine wakes up to witness a spell taking place. She looks up and it’s Alaric. But as soon as he speaks, she realizes it’s Klaus who has now taken over his body.
