Author Charlaine Harris Answers Fans Questions

Author of the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mysteries Charlaine Harris answered questions posted by fans on The Washington Post yesterday via live chat. Here are some excerpts:

Q.

Alan Ball and Bill

How do you feel about Alan Ball’s wanting to keep putting Bill and Sookie back together? It just seems that Sookie and Eric’s relationship is so central to the books, that if Ball does what he wants, the show will become unrecognizable from the books.

A.

Charlaine Harris :

I’m not sure Alan is aiming for that, myself. Bill is pretty essential to the story, too, all the way through the books AND the show. I’ll be interested to see his conclusion, which may be different from mine.

Q.

Popularity

Ms. Harris – what are your thoughts around the True Boll series popularity? Did you think it would have – excuse the pun – such a cult following?

A.

Charlaine Harris :

I’m delighted the show is so popular, especially now that I know so many of the people who work on it. I never imagined my own career arc or that of the show. Who could?

My Opinion on the whole True Blood/Books Issue:

After reading all these questions, what pissed me off was the whining that True Blood is nothing like the books and the series ruined it and some people had the balls to attack her for it.

Just like Mrs. Harris said ‘Don’t Watch’.

I always hated it when people complained about a tv show or song, no one is forcing you to watch it. If you have a fucking problem with then don’t watch it. How stupid do you have to be to believe a man who works in Hollywood when he says that he’ll keep true to the books. Do you know how rare that is for someone who works in Hollywood to keep their word. It was never going to be just like the books and your naïve to believe it would be. The same people who bitch about the show not being the same as the books are also they same people who don’t want Quinn in season 5 or any part of the series, or they want Tara dead and other characters. You can NOT have it both fucking ways. You either accept the changes done to the show and continue watching it or stop watching it. You CANNOT bitch about the series being nothing like the books and then bitch that you don’t want certain characters from the books to be in the series. It does not work that way. You have to choose. Accept the changes or fucking leave it alone.
