The Vampire Diaries Episode 301 ‘The Birthday’ Recap

 Okay, My first attempt in writing a recap for The Vampire Diaries or any show for that matter. The Vampire Diaries episode 301 ‘The Birthday’ was directed by John Behring and written by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec.

The show starts at Tennessee on a farmhouse. A young woman walks outside her home calling her dog ‘Rudy.’ She turns around and sees Klaus standing there. He wants to use her phone because his “car” ran out of gas. She said yes that he can borrow her phone but he has to stay outside and she will bring the phone to him. Klaus is annoyed that she refused him so he compels her to invite him in. There is an another woman in the kitchen and when she turns around, Klaus is there with Rudy’ owner crying. Klaus tells the other woman that he is looking for Ray Sutton. She tells him that she doesn’t know where he is because he travels a lot, but Klaus says that he expects Ray shows up every once a month’ and the look of the woman’s face confirms it. Klaus tells the other woman if she doesn’t tell him where Ray is he will force her too and it will be painful for her.

The woman runs for the front door and when she opens the door, she screams because Stefan is standing outside of the front door. Klaus replies that he loves it when they run. The woman tells him where Ray is at Tulley, near the border in a bar called ‘Southern Comfort’ it’s off of Highway 44. Klaus thanks her and then tells Rudy’s owner to invite Stefan inside and she does. Klaus pushes Rudy’s owner towards Stefan and tells him to kill her quickly and make the other woman suffer. Rudy’s owner begs for her life to Stefan and he attacks her and bites her. Both women start screaming and you see Klaus outside walking away with a smile on his face.

Over to Elena’s house, she’s in bed awake and it’s the morning of her 18th birthday and she doesn’t look happy. Could be the fact that the man is loves is missing that’s causing the unhappiness. Elena gets up and wakes her brother Jeremy up. He complains it’s too early and she replies no your late for work. Matt called. Jeremy looks at his cell and said ‘Maybe he’ll fire me’ and Elena scoffs ‘Aim high.’ Jeremy gets up and is sitting on his bed. Elena walks down the stairs talking to Caroline asking her what’s she is doing and Caroline tells her just shopping for the party your trying to bail out on. Elena replies that she never said yes in the first place and Caroline said she was never going to, which is why she planned it anyway and that her mom (Sheriff Forbes) wants Elena to call her. Elena asked did she find something and Caroline  said an animal attack in Memphis. The third one this week in Tennessee. Elena is at the kitchen where she sees Alaric attempt to make coffee in the coffeemaker. Elena asks Caroline if she’s sure it’s a vampire and Caroline replies yes. Elena tells Caroline to have the party but make it a small one. Caroline tells her to look pretty and hangs up on her when she sees Tyler. Alaric asked if she got news on Stefan and she said yet. We find out that Alaric has been sleeping on the sofa mourning the loss of Jenna and trying his best to look after Elena and Jeremy.

Then we see Damon in a bubble bath poring champagne in his wine glass, but there’s only a drop left so he asks Andie to get him one and she refuses saying he’s a big boy he can get it himself. So he stands up all naked and soapy and doesn’t bother to dry himself off or wrap a towel around his waist and walks out into the hall to get the champagne. We see Elena showing up, fixing her hair when Damon shows up behind her. She turns around shocked and turns around again not to see him and complains that he set her up because he knew it was her. Then she covers her eyes and throws him a towel and waits until he wraps it around his waist. She takes a peek to make sure he’s decent then tells him she has another lead thanks to Sherrif Forbes that Stefan might be in Tennessee. Damon said it’s another dead-end. Elena is pissed and said she will go by herself if he doesn’t want to help because it’s a new lead and they haven’t had one in a while. Damon promises to check it out with her.

Over at Mystic Grill, Jeremy is chatting with his girlfriend Bonnie about how boring it is without her here. She replies it’s that she’s just as bored being with her father’s family. Bonnie tells him she’s happy he has a summer job because he needs some normal in his life. Then the lights flicker and Bonnie asked what is that, Jeremy knowing what it is, panics and tries to hang up on her, but Bonnie tells him to wait and asked if he’s okay, he assures her he is, he just misses her and wants her to hurry home. They say their goodbyes and when Jeremy turns around Ghost Vicki is in front of him and he drops his phone, she disappears and he picks up his phone and Ghost Anna is behind him. When she’s about to touch him, Matt walks in and she disappears. Matt asked Jeremy to switch sections because Caroline and Tyler are sitting in his table, Jeremy does it and grabs a pitcher of water and heads over to them.

Caroline and Tyler are having lunch and she tells Tyler that his mom keeps looking at her and when Jeremy shows up, Caroline tells him Matt told you to switch sections because he thinks we’re dating. Tyler replies so my mom thinks so too, everyone does. Caroline tells him that’s crazy.

Then we head over to ‘Southern Comfort’ where Ray Sutton(Guest star David Gallagher) shows up and asked for a beer. Klaus walks up and sits next to him and asked if he’s Ray Sutton, Ray asked who wants to know. Klaus tells him how hard it was to find his kind and Ray tries to leave but Stefan blocks him. Ray knows their vampires. Klaus tells him well Stefan is, I’m a hybrid (half vampire, half werewolf) Klaus tells Ray that he will tell him where is pack is, Ray tells him you can’t compel me, so Stefan tells the bartender to bring him a drink and he shows Ray that he has wolfsbane, which is like vervain only for werewolves and you think he’s going to make Ray drink it. Not so fast, but that’s later to be revealed.

Alaric and Damon are at the house in Tennessee where Stefan killed those two young women and the house is covered with blood. Since the two girls are dead, Damon is able to walk inside. When they reached the living room, they see the two dead girls sitting down on the sofa. Damon tells Alaric Stefan is the one that killed these girls because when he blocks out, he rips them apart, which is how he got the name Ripper. Damon kicks the dead girl her head falls off, which proves his point.

Over at the Salvatore house, Elena, Caroline, and Tyler are setting up decorations and other things for her birthday party. Tyler tells Elena that maybe Damon doesn’t want to find Stefan because he’s into you and that’s why he’s taking so long looking for him. Caroline scorns Tyler, Elena tells Tyler that Damon would help looking for Stefan because he’s his brother, Tyler tells Elena, you did kiss him. Caroline again scorns him. Elena smiles and Caroline apologizes to her and Elena defends the kiss because it was a goodbye kiss because she thought he was dying. Elena realizes she missed a call from Bonnie and leaves to call her back. Caroline tells Tyler that just because she tells him things doesn’t mean he’s allowed to know it. Tyler apologizes and tells Caroline he’s got a date with Sophie to the party and Caroline laughs saying your bringing slutty Sophie to the party. Tyler tells her it’s because he’s horny and hasn’t had any in a while, Caroline tells him she understands because she hasn’t either and she is too. She explains it’s a vampire thing because their emotions are in overdrive and Tyler tells her it’s a werewolf thing too. There’s a moment of sexual tension before they go back to working on the party.

Back to Damon and Alaric, Damon pours gasoline on the dead girls and all over the living room because since Stefan and Klaus didn’t cover their tracks, Damon wants to keep the existence of vampires a secret. Before he lights it up, they find a trap door on the floor, where they see chains and Damon replies’ What do you know, werewolves’. Damon lights the place on fire and they walk away.

Over to Klaus, Stefan, and Ray, Stefan is using Ray as a dartboard and throws wolfsbane covered darts at him to make him talk. A woman who is compelled tells Klaus that Damon showed up to the farmhouse where Stefan killed those girls. This info pisses off Klaus and he tells Stefan, he’s going to have to take care of Damon himself. Stefan tells Klaus let him take care of his brother.

Back to Elena, she is dressed for the party and Damon shows up and she tells him ‘ Don’t worry, I won’t cry’ and he replies ‘It’s your party, you can cry if you want too.’  Damon gives Elena a present and promises her he didn’t buy it and she asked, did you steal it? He said no, he found it. He opens the box to show her necklace. Alaric found it in his apartment and Damon returned it to her. He puts the necklace around her neck.

At Elena’s birthday party, she walks with Damon to greet her guest and sees way too many people at her party. Elena is not happy and tells Caroline this is a small party. Elena and Caroline leave to get a drink. Jeremy and Matt are smoking pot because each have their own problems. Jeremy tells Matt that since he’s death he’s been seeing things, but doesn’t tell him what. Matt leaves and wishes Elena a Happy Birthday and kisses her on the cheek in front of Caroline. When he leaves Caroline tells her he hates me. Elena said he doesn’t hate you, he just hates that he’s not with you. Elena sees her brother smoking pot and leaves annoyed. Elena sees Damon and Alaric and asks Damon for his drink because she’s upset that Jeremy is smoking pot. Damon asked if it’s good pot. Elena calls him an ass. She asks Alaric to talk to Jeremy because he looks up to him. Damon tells him he’s screwed because before she showed up, Alaric was talking about how he was a parent’s worst nightmare because he’s a teacher and he is allowing teens to drink and do drugs. After that Damon tells him to drink up so he won’t feel weird about it.

 

Over to the television news station, Andie Starr (Who is Damon somewhat girlfriend and a reporter) is talking to someone and telling the person to get a life because she has a party to go to. A spotlight is aimed at her and she complains the light is hurting her eyes and she walks away from the light. The spotlight is aimed at her again. She’s afraid so she runs for it and trips she looks back a sees a person and gets up and Stefan is in front of her. She tells Stefan where has he been, they have been looking for him and then you see Stefan’s face change to his vampire face.

Back at Elena’s party, Caroline is sulking and drinking while watching Tyler dance with Sophie. Matt walks up beside her and asked her why she is upset with Tyler being with someone else when she and Tyler are supposed to be moral enemies because she’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf. Caroline tells him to shut up because someone could hear him and he apologizes. Tyler walks to her with his date and asked her what that was all about and Sophie tells Caroline she threw a great party, Caroline smiles sarcastically and compels the girl to leave. Tyler is pissed at what she did and she walks away.

 

Elena goes into Damon’s room only to see Caroline there. Caroline tells Elena that she should move on with her life. Elena is pissed to hear this and tells her does everyone think I should move on with my life, should she give up on Stefan? Caroline tells her not to give up on Stefan, but that’s no excuse to let her life pass her by. Elena tells Caroline her only wish is to know if Stefan is alive. Caroline apologizes, saying she’s drunk. Elena is looking at Damon’s closet to see a paper trail of news on Klaus and Caroline walks up to her to see what’s going on. Elena tells her what the papers are and Caroline tells her why Damon never told her and she replies she doesn’t know.

At the news station, Damon is there looking for Andie and gets a call from Elena pissed out and demanding to know where is he? Damon lies and tells her he’s at the punch bowl, Elena doesn’t buy it and asks him why he didn’t tell her about Klaus and Damon tells her ‘Oh, I have to stop a beer pong game” and hangs up on her. He starts searching for Andie, but can’t find her, and then he sees Stefan. He tells him ‘You don’t write, you don’t call’ . Damon tells him that he knows what he did and if he keeps on doing it, he can’t save him. Stefan tells him he doesn’t need to be saved. Stefan tells to leave him alone, Damon tells him that there is a birthday girl who won’t let him do that. Stefan then reveals Andie on a catwalk because he compelled her too. Damon tells him ‘not cool, brother’  Stefan tells Andie to walk and she falls, Damon tries to save her but Stefan pushes him against the wall and Damon tells him he’s over the edge and Stefan tells him to let him go. Damon pushes him off him and runs to Andie to see she is dead and turns to see Stefan gone.

 Caroline and Tyler are arguing about what she did to Sophie. Tyler tells her why she cares if he’s dating. If she doesn’t tell him how she feels he will continue dating. Caroline grabs him and kisses him and they kiss each other and Tyler tells her let’s leave and she says okay. Before she’s gone she tells Damon he missed the cake.

Damon goes to his room and sees Elena and she has the papers that Damon kept from her. She gives him hell on why he didn’t tell her about Klaus’s victims trail and Damon tells her it’s not Klaus’s victims, their Stefan’s. Elena tells him he’s wrong and Damon tells her to accept it, that Stefan will never come back. Not in her lifetime. She starts to tear up and Damon feels sorry but leaves without apologizing.

Matt looks lost outside and Jeremy asked him what’s he doing. Matt said he can’t find his car and can he get a ride with him. Jeremy said okay. When Jeremy gets inside he sees Ghost Vicki and she tells him to help her. Matt sits down in the car and asked him what did you say? Jeremy say it’s nothing and turned on the engine of his car and the headlights turned on and Ghost Anna appeared which freaked Jeremy out. He tells Matt he’s too out of it and they should walk home instead.

Back over with Klaus and Ray, Klaus is still torturing Ray and Ray told him ‘I already told you what you wanted to know’ Klaus tells him there more that he wants, Klaus cuts his own arm and forces Ray to drink and Ray asked what’s next, Klaus breaks his neck. Stefan is there and tells Klaus that Damon won’t bother them anymore. Klaus tells Stefan it was a test to prove that he still cares about his family and Stefan denies it. Klaus tells him, it’s alright because the more he drinks, the more he will forget his feelings and let go of the past.

Over at Elena and Jeremy’s house, Alaric is packing up his things and tells Elena he’s too messed up to help Elena and Jeremy anymore and now that Elena is 18 she will have to take care of things from now on.

Over at Tyler’s house, Tyler and Caroline are kissing and taking each others’ clothes off and have sex for the first time. Finally. Damon goes to Stefan’s room and trashes it because he’s so pissed off. Stefan walks out of the bar upset and calls Elena. Elena realizes it’s Stefan and tells him not to let go, that she loves him and to never let that go. Stefan starts to cry and nods his head.

Over at Tyler’s house, Caroline gets dressed and looks upset at what they done and leaves his room as quietly as possible, but runs into Tyler’s mom. Caroline tries to make an excuse, but can’t so she tells her, she’s leaving and when she grabs her purse her hand burns. The purse is covered in vervain. Tyler’s mom shoots Caroline with vervain covered darts and Caroline is out cold. Looks like Caroline’s secret is out.
