Okay, the show started with Damon chained up to a chair with a fireplace poker through his chest. He calls out Stefan because he thinks Stefan did this to him and he doesn’t want to play any twisted ripper games. Stefan shows up and laughs. He asks Damon what happened and Damon accuses him of doing this to him. Stefan tells him he didn’t and pulls out the poker and removes one of the restraints and leaves him. Damon is annoyed and tells him, “Yeah, I’ll just entangle myself “. Both brothers do not see Manson(Tyler’s uncle and he’s dead by the way) next to them. Manson opens the window curtain (which by the way, Damon’s ring that protects him from sunlight is removed from his finger and it’s on the floor) to let out the sunlight and it burns Damon.
Now where at the main square of Mystic Town, where the townsfolk are listening to Mrs Lockwood talk about the history of the founding members. The historian of the town name Tobias Fells walks up to the podium. Alaric and Jeremy are there and Jeremy asks Alaric who Tobias is and Alaric tells him he’s the Mystic Falls historian and he’s the reason he’s (Alaric) there and Jeremy tells him that it explains why he’s there, but does he (Jeremy) have to be there. Alaric tells him if he’s not here then he will fail him. Elena shows up and asks what she missed. Anna tells her just a bunch of historical lies because the founders, you know, stole from the vampires, but of course, Elena can’t hear her since she’s a ghost. Only Jeremy can.
Where with Bonnie and Caroline putting up lanterns for the Night of Illumination. An event that the townsfolk in the 18th century would put lanterns on their doors to let know they were safe from vampires. Caroline talks to Bonnie about the problem with Jeremy and Anna. Bonnie tells Caroline she’s not okay with it, but there’s nothing she can do to stop it. Damon drives up to them and tells Bonnie that he’s pretty sure that Manson is back. Caroline asks him how does he know and he tells her because he was chained up and turned into a spitfire with the fireplace poker through his chest. Damon tells Bonnie that whatever she did to banish Vicki Donovan screwed up something and that when he kills someone they’re supposed to stay dead. He tells her to fix whatever she screwed up.
Where back with Elena, Jeremy, and Alaric sitting together outside of Mystic Grill talking about Stefan. Elena wants Jeremy to reach Lexi from the other side to help her save Stefan. Elena tells Alaric that Lexi was Stefan’s best friend and in Stefan’s journals he writes that Lexi was the only one to save him from his ripper self. She wants to talk to Lexi and ask her how she did it, but Jeremy wasn’t sure he could. He had no connection to her, and Anna wasn’t sure that all supernatural beings end up where she was — some may find peace. Jeremy left the conversation he was having with Elena and Alaric when Anna told him not to tell Elena that she was there. He lied to Elena and Alaric about checking his work schedule to he can talk to Anna alone.
Alaric tells Elena she should leave things alone with the dead because of what Vicki did to his car. Stefan shows up and sits down next to Elena asking them why he wasn’t invited to the Founding Families event. Stefan grabs one of his journals and looks through it. He tells them he’s forgotten how much he use to care and Elena tells him she didn’t. Before he gets up and leaves, he tells them this “Besides, there’s gonna be people everywhere tonight, so there’s gonna be lots to eat. I’m kidding. I’m kidding. Loosen up.”
Bonnie talks to Matt if he still sees Vicki and he tells her no. He’s done with the supernatural world and wants it to stay that way. He leaves and Bonnie tells Caroline if it’s not Vicki that attacked Damon then Damon is right that something is wrong. Bonnie’s bag opens and her grimoire flips open to show a manifest spell. Bonnie and Caroline head over to the mansion that the witches were killed at and where Jeremy died to cast the manifest spell to show the ghosts.
Back to Jeremy, He asks Anna why he can’t tell Elena that he still sees Anna and Anna tells him that Elena is Bonnie’s best friend. She wouldn’t understand. Jeremy kisses Anna to see if there was still something there between them.
When the spell ended, it worked because Caroline and Bonnie could see Grams standing there, holding Bonnie’s hands. Elena goes into the bathroom at Mystic Grill and sees Anna finishing the kiss with Jeremy. Stefan sees Lexi and Mason shows up to smash a glass cup on Damon’s forehead. Damon tells Alaric told ya.
Back to Lexi, Lexi chats with Stefan about how off the rails he is, big time, and she’s going to help him whether he likes it or not. So she smashes his head on a car window and knocks him out. Grams explained that when Bonnie did the spell to block the magic giving Vicki a foothold in this world, the old witch on the other side wedged a door wide open giving a free pass to anybody with unfinished business. They need to close that door. The Original Witch’s talisman, Elena’s necklace, allows her to draw power from this side. Bonnie needed to destroy it. As previously mentioned, Elena walked in on Jeremy and Anna after Bonnie’s manifestation spell worked. She said she’d let Jeremy tell Bonnie about the kiss after they got the necklace back from Damon, destroyed it, and sent the ghosts away. When Elena leaves the bathroom, Lexi shows up and asks Elena if she still wants to save Stefan. Elena goes with her to learn Ripper Detox 101 as Lexi calls it. Back to Mason, Damon told him to cut to the chase: “I killed you. You want revenge. Get in line.” Mason said he didn’t want revenge, he wanted an apology. Alaric laughed, but things turned serious when Mason said he’d help Damon find a weapon to kill Klaus if he apologized. Damon admitted he didn’t have to kill Mason. He does a lot of things he doesn’t have to do. You call that an apology? But it was good enough for Mason. He told Damon to meet him at the old Lockwood cellar and to come alone.
Back to Lexi and Elena, Lexi tells Elena how to save Stefan. The plan is to starve away the bloodlust and strip away the temptation. I didn’t know what kind of mind compulsion Lexi was doing at first, but apparently, she was making him hallucinate so he’d feel like he’d gone months, no years, without blood. Like any addict, he tried to prey on Elena’s feelings. He was hurting, he loved her, she had to make it stop. Lexi made her hold strong, and Stefan snapped back to his Bad Stefan self. Once he’s weak enough, Lexi said, you have to cause him pain, make him feel things — anger, rage, anything. You have to make him see past the blood. Caroline and Bonnie were looking for the necklace, which wasn’t where Damon said it would be. Elena told Caroline to hold off on destroying it anyway, because Lexi was there to try to help Stefan. Caroline said they’d find the necklace, then choose which boyfriend ghost drama to solve. Bonnie overhead the use of plural “dramas” on the call, and Caroline came clean about the kiss. Bonnie tears up feeling betrayed as well as she should. I can’t believe that people are defending Jeremy. How is it okay for your boyfriend or girlfriend to cheat on you? How can you tell her to be understanding to what Jeremy is feeling? C’mon, no one will be okay with their boyfriend or girlfriend kissing someone else unless you are in an open relationship. Anyway, back to Jeremy the cheater Gilbert, he’s looking for Anna that the Night of Illumination event, where he bumps into Frederick (remember him, he was one of the vampires trapped in the tomb and he wanted to make the descendents pay for their ancestors did to them in season one, he also kidnapped Stefan back in season one too.) Frederick and the vampires from the tomb that all got killed by Damon, Alaric, and Stefan are in Mystic Falls and they start their vengeance by hanging up a dead Tobias to a tree. After Bonnie and Caroline give up their search in the Salvatore mansion, Jeremy calls to warn them about Frederick and the others. Caroline tells him that Anna has the necklace they’re looking for. Jeremy doesn’t believe her and Caroline tells him to stop being an idiot and wake up before he loses everything. Jeremy turns around to Anna, but she’s gone.
Mason knew about Mikael, and said there wasn’t much to do on the other side than sit around and watch other people screw things up. Mason also knew that Damon would do anything to save Stefan from Klaus, just like he would do anything to save hybrid minion Tyler from his sire. As long as they had that in common, they could work together.
When Mason told Damon to go down one tunnel and he got pinned by three booby-trap stakes you thought he had lied. But no, his motives were pure. He’d just abandoned Damon to go fetch the shovel they’d use to make their way into the cave to free him. It’s not revenge Mason wants, he said, it’s redemption. He’s alone on the other side, too. You watch the people you left behind and regret your decisions. He can’t change the mistakes he made, but he can help correct Tyler’s course.
Elena takes a break from the ripper detox 101, she couldn’t handle seeing Stefan get stakes a couple of times, that’s when she sees the cops and the craziness that happened with Tobias. She asks Jeremy what happened and he tells her. She tells him that this has to end, the ghosts need to leave, but Jeremy doesn’t want to lose Anna. He tells Elena he loves her and has always loved only her. Elena tells him he’s in love with a dead girl. Anna shows up with the necklace and Elena tells him he’s at the beginning of his life and it’s not right for her to hold him back and she knows it. Elena tells Jeremy to call Bonnie and tell her to cast the spell to banish the ghosts.
Caroline and Bonnie are driving back to the mansion to where Jeremy died to start the spell until they see Mrs Lockwood in a car accident. It’s a trap cause by Frederick and friends for Caroline’s mom, so Caroline tells Bonnie to leave without her because she has to protect her mom and Mrs Lockwood. Bonnie drives off and Caroline vamps up to fight.
Jeremy tells Anna that just because Bonnie’s casting the spell to make the ghosts go away, this doesn’t mean it’s goodbye for them. Anna tells him that Elena is right. She can’t keep him back any longer and the reason she took the necklace is because she was hoping to see her mother, but maybe it won’t happen since her mom could be at peace and she bursts into tears because she doesn’t want to be alone anymore. Jeremy holds her and tells her he won’t let that happen. Jeremy takes the necklace and leaves to give to Bonnie. When he reaches Bonnie, she snatches the necklace from him angrily and throws it on the fireplace. She starts to cast the spell and her grandmother shows up to help her.
Damon and Mason continued on until Damon got stopped by an invisible force field. Mason had found something…which he was looking at when Bonnie sent the ghosts bye-bye. Mason doesn’t get the chance to tell Damon what he found because he disappears. Lexi tells Elena that Stefan is still in there and to not give up on him before she too is gone. Caroline is kicking ghostly vampires and it looked for a second she was in trouble with Frederick because he had been choking her, but he too disappeared. Anna walks around Mystic Falls and sees her mother, they hug and cried before they are gone too. I cried when this happened. Grams tells Bonnie “You are stronger than all of this. I’m so proud of you” before she’s gone too.
Elena, meanwhile, was getting ready to leave Stefan unattended and do what else she had to do — take care of Jeremy, be there for Bonnie, Stefan thought she was finally giving up on him. Lexi had shown her what her future would be, and she was bailing. Elena said she hadn’t given up hope, but there was nothing she can do until Stefan gets his back. He needs to fight to feel something. “Because if you don’t, you’re gonna lose me forever,” she told him. “I won’t love a ghost for the rest of my life.”
Damon calls Alaric to help find out what Mason found. Alaric tells him isn’t there anyone else you could have called. Damon tells him that the only humans he trusts are Elena and him. Alaric still is pissed at Damon abou killing him and Damon apologizes to him with the same speech he used on Mason, only this time he means it.
Bonnie tells Jeremy to leave, he tried to explain why he kissed Anna, but Bonnie was not interested in listening to it now. Jeremy leaves and something happens in the fireplace. Elena’s necklace is back and in great condition.
Alaric heads towards where Mason was before he disappeared and he sees what Mason saw. It’s cave drawing and Damon asks what it is and Alaric says he doesn’t know.
The show ends.
I liked this episode, it’s not one of my favorite of the series, but it wasn’t bad either.
