Zach Roerig Interviews with TV Fanatic and Zap2it – What is Matt’s purpose in Mystic Falls?

In an interview with TV Fanatic, The Vampire Diaries star Zach Roerig talks about his character Matt Donovan and Matt’s purpose in Mystic Falls.

“His friends are starting to see that they can lean on him when they’re feeling low,” Zach Roerig just told me over the phone. “And Matt is starting to realize none of them should have to live this way. He’s kind of sick of all this sh-it.”

But what can a human being really do about it in Mystic Falls?

“I might not have a ring and I might not be able to bite your neck,” the actor says. “But I’m not gonna stand for this any more.”

And then over to Zap2it, Zach also talks about Matt’s dancing skills and more.

”Matt Donovan is a jack of many trades!” he laughs. “Do you know how many books Matt reads? What else is he doing with his time? The only reason Matt is so polite – he’s never had a father figure, no one to lead by example – so the way I see it, Matt obviously has read Emily Post’s Guide to Etiquette. He hangs out in the break room at the Grill and teaches himself to dance. Clearly.”

In previous seasons, Matt may have felt less essential to the show, but Zach says that these days, he feels more integral to the series and he’s not necessarily looking for Matt to get in on the vampire action. “The question for me with Matt has been ‘Where does he fit in? What’s his purpose?’ Right now, I feel really content as an actor. I finally feel like I know what Matt’s purpose is. I know it sounds kind of cheesy, but remaining the only pure human being in Mystic Falls is important. I’m at a place where I really understand where he fits in with everything. The amount of work has been consistent with what I’ve had before, but I’ve had some really nice moments and I value that.”

Torrey Devitto thinks Meredith Fell days are numbered

Hollywood Life recently spoken to The Vampire Diaries star Torrey Devitto about her character Meredith Fell, how she research for the character, and how she thinks Meredith will die eventually this season.

Torrey DeVitto has a little ritual she does every time she gets a new Vampire Diaries script: ”I flip through really fast to see: Am I dead yet? No? OK, great, I’ll start from the beginning now.” But as one of the only fully human characters remaining on the show, she knows her days are numbered. “It’s kind of inevitable,” she tells HollywoodLife.com. “How long can I really last on this crazy, supernatural show? I’m just thankful I’ve lasted this long.”

Dating Alaric (Matt Davis) certainly isn’t helping Meredith’s chances of surviving in Mystic Falls — let’s not forget what happened about to Jenna (Sara Canning) and Isobel (Mia Kirshner) — but Torrey doesn’t care. She’s fully behind Meredith and Alaric’s rapidly evolving romance.

“I think there’s consequences to every relationship on this show,” she admits. “There are so many components mess them up. It’s hard to maintain a normal, healthy relationship. But I think their relationship is building in a cool way. I like these characters together, I think they work really well. I’m always excited to see where they’re going next.”

She also likes the changes that Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have made to her character, who was very different in L.J. Smith‘s original Vampire Diaries books.

“I actually auditioned for the pilot, and when Paul [Wesley] booked it, I went to Borders and bought the whole series,” she recalls. “It was so long ago that I didn’t remember specifics about Meredith, but I did remember her. She’s definitely different on the show, and that’s why I didn’t revisit the books. I didn’t want to get conflicted views in my head.”
